This volume brings together the contributions presented at the international seminar “In Dialogue with the West: Renaissance and Renovatio in Sixteenth-Century Russia”, held in Florence (April 27 and 28, 2023), and aims to shed new light on Russia’s cultural relations with the Italian peninsula and the Western world in general, already been the subject of previous studies. Offering an interdisciplinary overview of interactions that goes beyond traditional approaches, thanks to the diverse expertise of the contributors, the volume highlights some of the fundamental issues, methodological aspects, and interpretative keys that will be very useful for future research.

Marcello Garzaniti, formerly full professor at the University of Florence, is a member of the Editorial Council of the Firenze University Press. His research focuses on the Slavonic Bible, the Slavic Literatures history, and the relationships between culture and religion in Slavic countries.

Ovanes Akopyan is a Research Associate (Tenure-Track Assistant Professor) at the Institute of Philosophy, Zagreb, and a Visiting Professor at Ibn Haldun University in Istanbul. His research interests focus on the intellectual history of the Renaissance and the modern age.

Francesca Romoli is Associate Professor of Slavic Studies at the University of Pisa. Her main research interests concern the medieval East Slavic literary tradition, relations between Muscovy and Italy in the 16th century, and the figure and work of Maximus the Greek. She is the PI of the PRIN MaximHum.

Iris Karafillidis holds a research contract at the University of Padua and is an adjunct professor of Russian literature at the University of Siena. Her research interests focus on medieval Slavic literary tradition, Church Slavonic heritage and religious lexicon in contemporary Russian literature, and religious dissent in the USSR in the 1960s and 1980s.
