The first part traces the evolution and changes in the organisation of the Museum over two centuries of existence. The final chapters illustrate the importance of the collections and possible future developments.

Brunetto Chiarelli, lecturer in Anthropology and Ethnology, since 2006 has held the Naturalistic Museology course in the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Florence. Director of the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnology of the University of Turin between 1963 and 1979, in 1970 he supervised the reorganisation of the Musée de l'Homme in Paris, and since 1990 has collaborated with the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History of Washington D.C.
