This volume examines the transformations that have occurred in recent decades within the university systems of England, France, Spain, and Italy. For each country, the analysis focuses on three key dimensions: governance, evaluation, and ranking. The comparative perspective highlights the main axes along which these systems diverge, including degrees of centralization versus institutional autonomy, the university’s role as a public mission versus a market-oriented entity, top-down versus bottom-up models of decision-making, and the use of selective versus open-access approaches to student admission.
