The analysis of public and private universities in Italy is structured into four sections. The first provides a historical overview of the key developments in the Italian university system, which was originally inspired by the centralized Napoleonic model. The second examines the shift toward institutional autonomy that began in the 1980s. The third discusses the major systemic reforms that have affected universities, with particular attention to those implemented over the past decade. Finally, the fourth section highlights several persistent challenges facing public universities, including underfunded research, high dropout rates, and low graduation rates.
