The chapter offers a comparative analysis of governance and evaluation systems for research and teaching in universities across four European countries: Italy, France, England, and Spain. Governance models are presented along a continuum ranging from hierarchical centralization to university autonomy, highlighting a progressive convergence towards forms of indirect governance and meritocratic evaluation criteria based on performance measurements in research and teaching, which underpin the structuring of academic rankings. The implications of such rankings are discussed in relation to career progression for academic staff and to university funding. The text reflects on the challenges posed by managerial culture and competition in contemporary university systems, proposing the need for an alternative reflection to effectively address the demands for quality and innovation in modern universities.
