The chapter is divided into six paragraphs. The first outlines the evolution of the French university system and the second describes its current structure. The third deals with access to higher education. The fourth paragraph reports university governance. The fifth discusses the increase in activities delegated to universities and the measures taken to assess teaching and research quality. The sixth paragraph covers the positions of French universities in international rankings.
