This chapter examines the transformation of the Spanish university system, emphasizing its harmonization with the European Higher Education Area. It explores the tensions between university autonomy and state centralization, as well as between academic education and the demands of the labor market. The analysis begins in the post-Franco era, reviewing the main reform laws and the mechanisms of governance, accreditation, and career progression established through national and regional evaluation agencies. The challenges of internationalization and the development of the “third mission” are also discussed as key factors in strengthening the social role of universities.
