According to the Latins, the example did not imply solely the use of the senses or of a practice subtly aimed at mimesis (exemplar), but could be the vehicle for a primarily intellectual knowledge, hence rather concerning the daemon, considerably more elusive than the (exemplum) analogy. In the discipline of the design project, where regulating ideas appear increasingly tenuous and uncertain, proceeding by samples can be the direct route to a more profound understanding of the phenomena. Effectively, setting aside the peremptory dualism and the simple oppositions – general vs particular, type vs singularity – by offering itself as an incoherent mesh of specificity and universality, the paradigm-example can in this context represent the most efficacious tool for future buddings and morphings. Spanning from research to teaching, the projects gathered in this book thus have to be interpreted at once as the archetypes and the results, the origins and the outcomes of a possible school of architecture.
