Between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the European novel shares with the emerging sciences de l’homme a common interest in the «particular»: the private individual, the single case, the detail revealed in its everyday dimension. This volume explores that convergence, showing how narrative does not merely mirror the analytic method but assumes and at once exceeds it, becoming the laboratory of a knowledge that seeks to be both general and circumscribed. The nine studies gathered here, from Rousseau and Diderot to Goethe, Hugo, Austen, Hoffmann and Manzoni, reconstruct a period in which literature and knowledge of man question one another, between empirical psychology, physiognomy, anthropology and literary theory, opening the way to the rise of the modern novelistic form.
