This volume examines the non-contractual employment relationships (slavery and servitude) which have long characterized the European economy, albeit with very different trends in different areas. The essays contained in it examine the evolution of servitude (seen as the economic side of the lords’ regime) and the different forms of personal submission, up to the actual slave trade, of which European merchants were the protagonists, highlighting a situation which was much more complex and articulated than the traditional interpretative schemes suggested.

He worked for ten years at the Culture Office and at the press office of the Municipal Administration of Prato, then, since 1992, he has been an employee of the “F. Datini" International Institute of Economic History, where he coordinates scientific activities, as well as scientific disclosure and publication activities. Since 1987, he has edited almost every publication of the Proceedings from the “Settimane di Studi” (“Study weeks”) events, and since 1993, he has been the secretary of the Institute’s Scientific Committee. He combines the strictly professional activity to archival research. In 2010, within Giampiero Nigro’s volume, Francesco di Marco Datini. L’uomo e il mercante, he published the essays in the section about the construction of Palazzo Datini.
