What is the relationship between public debt and private wealth? And what do family policies have to do with these financial aggregates? We will see that there is a connection, but let's first clarify what is meant by family. In the common sense, a family includes ascenders, descendants and collaterals. But when we talk about family policies we only think of potential parents or families with pre-school children.

Alessandro Cigno

Alessandro Cigno graduated in Economics from the University of Catania, then specialised in Development Economics at the Specialisation Centre of the University of Naples (Portici) and obtained a PhD in Mathematical Economics from the University of Birmingham (UK). For many years he has taught in various European and American universities, including as Full Professor Hull (UK), Wisconsin (Madison, USA), Pisa and finally Florence. He was President of ESPE (European Society for Population Economics) and CHILD (Centre for Household, Income, Labour and Demographic Economics), Consultant to the World Bank and still is an editor for the Journal of Population Economics. His research, published in leading international scientific journals, has been focusing for many years on the relationships between generations and on the optimal design of public intervention in this area. Among his books, the following stand out: Economics of the Family (Clarendon Press and Oxford University Press, 1991), The Economics of Child Labor (with F.C. Rosati, Oxford University Press, 2005) and Children and Pensions (with M. Werding, MIT Press, 2007).
