The university has long appeared as an ivory tower, poorly integrated with the rest of society and, in particular, with the economic sphere. This perception, however, is in contrast with the changes which have been introduced by universities since they embraced a 'third mission': transferring knowledge to the production system. This volume tries to clarify the said function of universities, and it does so by questioning the spread of these practices in Italy, the effectiveness of the different transfer channels and, more generally, the contribution given by universities in the social construction of innovation. Therefore, through case studies and a comparative reading of national innovation systems, the text opens a window on the interaction between public research, business world and governments, showing the characteristics and troubles of difficult relationships, especially in Italy.
