The volume describes experiences of the first twelve years of the Social Sciences Library of the University of Florence in its new location. We talk about management contexts, organisational structures, analysis, projects, crises and solutions affecting most of the services. Moreover, we also present an approach and a working method. Our need to write stemmed from the impression of having accomplished a phase of our work and of being called to take stock of the situation, giving account of the work done and critically analysing it, in order to be ready to face the new challenges that the future would present, starting from today.

Lucilla Conigliello has been director of the Social Sciences Library of the University of Florence since 2003. She curated and promoted the international conferences Le biblioteche universitarie verso l’Europa (“University Libraries towards Europe” Firenze, 1989) e Architettura della biblioteca e identità universitaria (“Library architecture and university identity” Firenze, 2006), as well as the seminar La conservazione di interi nuclei documentali. Un diverso approccio alla manutenzione e al restauro(“The conservation of entire documentary nuclei. A different approach to maintenance and restoration” Firenze, 2016). She is the author of the catalogue Gli statuti in edizione antica (1475-1799) della Biblioteca di giurisprudenza dell’Università degli studi di Firenze (“The ancient edition (1475-1799) of the statutes of the Law Library of the University of Florence” Roma, 2003). Chiara Melani has been a librarian at the University of Florence since 1999. She mainly deals with monitoring and the evaluation of services, as well as staff training. She edited the conference proceedings Architettura della biblioteca e identità universitaria (“Library architecture and university identity” Firenze, 2006).
