Epistolarum iuvenilium libri octo

  • Petri Candidi Decembrii,
  • Edited by:
  • Federico Petrucci,

The three-volume correspondence by Pier Candido Decembrio represents a precious source for the history of northern Humanism and, more generally, for the understanding of the fifteenth-century civilisation. The first epistolary volume covers the time span 1423-1432 and the themes of the epistles cover all the points of the political and literary humanistic debate, from Petrarch to Valla.

PIER CANDIDO DECEMBRIO (Pavia 1392-Milan 1477) was one of the most influential humanists at the court of the Visconti Family, as well as the secretarius of Duke Filippo Maria Visconti from 1419 to 1447. In addition to reviewing the translation of the Platonic Republic by his father Uberto and Emanuele Crisolora, Decembrio translated into Latin five books of the Iliad, some Lives of Plutarch and Appiano; he also translated into vernacular the work of Curzio Rufo, Cesare and Polibio. FEDERICO PETRUCCI won, in December 2008, the competition for the admission to the PhD course in History and tradition of texts in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, obtaining the title of Research Doctor in 2012.
