Today, it is difficult to fully assess the extent to which devotional confraternities influenced artistic patronage at the end of the Middle Ages. This is primarily due to the profound fragmentation of their earliest material and architectural heritage, caused by centuries of renovation and dispersal. Drawing on an extensive study of a well-defined and well-documented context—namely, the religious associations of Siena between the Thirteenth and Fifteenth centuries—this book seeks to reconstruct, from a diachronic perspective, the complex visual systems of lay confraternities. At the same time, it examines the forms of interaction between the brethren and the images, the ritual and physical settings in which this dialogue took place, and the typologies and functions of the objects that formed part of the confraternal furnishing.
