Across the southern Apuan Alps an old network of footpaths still links the hill villages of Camaiore. For centuries these paths were the lifelines of communities that put down roots along the steep contours of the surrounding woods. Marked throughout by traces of human presence, they now face neglect, gradual decline, and the erosion of memory. Taking the material history of this landscape as its starting point, the book asks how to look toward the future without losing sight of the present and the past from which it emerges. Its underlying conviction is simple: we owe a duty of care to whatever is minor or anonymous yet still bound up with identity, still felt to belong to us, and it is from the measure of such things that a livable future might yet be imagined.
