Un sindacato del XXI secolo

  • Stefano Bartolini
  • Maria Paola Del Rossi

Using oral history, this essay reconstructs the genesis of the NIdiL CGIL and the debates that have characterized the union throughout its existence. Through the collection of memoirs of local and national trade unionists, the essay traces the discovery of contemporary precariousness and the first attempts at worker organization, as well as the debates surrounding the scope of union representation along the boundary between subordinate work and self-employed but subaltern. Particular attention is paid to the internal dynamics of the union organization and its historical self-representation, challenged by economic and production restructuring and the emergence of new subjectivities in labour. The second essay reconstructs, through a dialogue with the three General Secretaries of NIdiL who held office between 2006 and 2026—Filomena Trizio, Claudio Treves, and Andrea Borghesi—the main challenges the organization faced, both in terms of representation and political action, during the turbulent 2010s of the twenty-first century.
