The paper addresses the theme of trade and non-trade during the 10th century, starting from an introductory paragraph necessary to discuss the macro-types of trade identified by past historiography that characterised the early Middle Ages in Europe in relation also to economic changes. In the following paragraph, on the other hand, a specific case study is presented concerning an area of Tuscany characterised by the presence of public estates, which has been the subject of extensive archaeological and multidisciplinary investigations in recent years. The contribution aims to compare the data on exchange systems deducible from documentary sources with those that can be identified by analysing the material evidence.
