The chapter presents the results of recent research on the theme of satira, from the rediscovery of Persius and Juvenal at the end of the ninth century to the Christianized reinvention of satirical critique in the tenth century. It uses this case study to exemplify new methodological approaches to the cultural history of that century and to highlight their euristic potential. These new perspectives, focused on a “bottom-up” reconstruction of the practices of cultural transmission and reworking, have over the past two decades opened up new lines of inquiry capable of producing innovative results even on traditional topics. The findings of recent research have completed the process of overcoming older categorizations of this period – categories that had already begun to prove inadequate within philological-literary and cultural-historical studies – and can contribute to a broader “rethinking” of the tenth century.
