In the QC we encounter three relatives of Plutarch’s indicated as his gambroi: Craton, Firmus, and Patrocleas. A long (and patient) survey on translations and commentaries show how difficult it is to determine their affinity with Plutarch. Several scholars take them for relatives; others prefer to consider them as the husbands of Plutarch’s nieces; still others believe them to be his sons-in-law, thus supposing the existence of three married daughters. However, he only had one daughter, named Timoxena, who lived just two years. The grandchild thygatridè (i.e. daughter of the daughter) who appears in the Cons. uxoris, is a grandchild of the messenger, not Plutarch’s. A passage of the treatise De frat. amore show that gambros means “brother-in-law” (besides “son-in-low”): therefore, these three relatives were obviously three brothers-in-law. If P. had no sisters, they were three brothers of Timoxena.
