The article gives an overview on research dealing with transmediterranean relations in the tenth century. It first engages with studies that give a broader perspective on transmediterranean connectivity and unanimously define the tenth century as a threshold between the end of Arabic-Islamic expansionism and the beginnings of Latin-Christian expansionism. The article then dedicates three sections to scholarship addressing the political, economic, and intellectual dimensions of interreligious relations across the Mediterranean. The concluding discussion of the prospects of future research hinges on Helmut Walther’s characterisation of the tenth century as a period of ‘missed opportunities’. It spells out the necessity of bringing different regional and thematic subfields together to explain which factors produced both the intensity of transmediterranean exchanges in the mid-tenth century and the shift to Latin-Christian hegemony in the eleventh.
