This essay aims to highlight – also rhetorically resorting to a famous example from ancient history – that all forms of retroactive law are always destined to profoundly alter social balances. Hence the retroactivity of some laws (such as those that go by the name of mild law or authentic interpretation law) is only in appearance a «necessary» feature. In reality, it is always a matter of political and non-neutral choices. And the mildness or interpretative character of the law only constitutes profiles of greater acceptability of the change desired by the legislator.
