This chapter reconstructs the historical and political context of European memory policies. Starting from early symbolic references to the World Wars and the commemoration of European integration and its leaders, it traces the gradual development of EU involvement in the field of memory politics. The chapter shows how, from the 1990s onwards, the EU increasingly intervened in this traditionally national domain, particularly in the Europeanization of Holocaust remembrance. Since the 2000s, and especially after the Eastern enlargement, memory politics has become increasingly politicized and conflictual.
