Based on research over the last thirty years, the presentation presents the main developments in historiography in four directions: documentary renewal, the segmentation of powers, changes in seigneurial domination, and the question of social mobility. The analysis leads to a revaluation of the place of the ecclesia in the exercise of domination and social transformations. It also notes the continuation of many Carolingian traditions that spread throughout society as a whole, beyond the territorial variations between Northern and Southern Francia and Western and Eastern Francia. The coherence of the century and a half from the end of the 9th century to the Gregorian reform encourages a return to the notion of the ‘first feudal age’ once proposed by Marc Bloch, but on new conceptual bases.
