n 2019 researchers from the University of Florence launched “La Barchetta Magica,” a small autonomous sailing drone designed to cross the Atlantic from the Canary Islands to Antigua. Equipped with GPS, inertial sensors, a vector ultrasonic anemometer, solar power, and satellite communication, it navigated autonomously for about 5000 km before contact was lost near the end of the journey.
