The essay traces the evolution of the concept of the ‘Kingdom of Italy’ between the end of the Carolingian Empire and the Ottonian era, highlighting how this entity has long been interpreted through a national paradigm focused on the weakness of royal power and the failure of Italian independence. After analysing the major syntheses produced in the post-war period and during the 1970s–1990s (from Fasoli to Fumagalli), the essay turns to subsequent thematic research on topics such as incastellamento, justice, kinship structures, and fiscal resources. These studies, also thanks to the contribution of international scholarship and a greater attention to historiographical construction, have significantly renewed the interpretation of the tenth century.
