Through a long-term perspective, this part traces the origins and political and organizational evolution of NIdiL CGIL from its founding in 1999 to 2010. Drawing on largely unpublished documentation held in the Archives of the NIdiL CGIL and the Historical Archives of the CGIL, it analyzes the role played by NIdiL not only within the union and in the process of building representation and protection for atypical workers, but more generally in a country grappling with the changes brought about by the major transformations of post-Fordist labor, from labor market reforms (at both the Italian and European levels), but more broadly from the major turning points that have characterized the contemporary era. As a significant innovation in the trade union sphere, NIdiL has enabled progress in the concept of a Confederal union and, through the experimentation with new forms of protection and collective bargaining, has opened “new frontiers” in labor representation, moving “beyond precarious employment”.
