From the 1980s, systems science researchers applied system theory to environmental engineering, modeling natural and artificial ecosystems. At the University of Florence this work produced tools and models for water treatment, river quality, lagoon eutrophication management, and environmental monitoring. These studies supported local environmental management and contributed to the creation of the Environmental and Territorial Engineering degree program.
