The essay identifies the Spanish hypotext of Don Gastone di Moncada by Giacinto Andrea Cicognini, an emblematic work of classical Spanish theater in the Italian 17th century, whose several models had been considered up to that point, none of them definitive. This is La paciencia en la fortuna, an anonymous comedia, recently attributed to Andrés de Claramonte. Cicognini followed it very closely although with some interesting changes due to adaptation to the Italian stage practice of the time and the tradition of religious brotherhoods (in carnival times was encouraged by the representation of moral and educational works to contrast the vices into which young people could fall during those festive days).
