The article presents the 10th century sources about East Central Europe and the historiography from the mid 20th century. It deals first with the establishment and development of East Central European principalities and the basic pillars of princely power and the fortified settlements’ function and early principalities’ growth, before studying the subsequent development of the future Kingdom of Hungary. Finally, the role of the Church will be examined through the introduction of Christianity and the role of the papacy and the Ottonians and then the Old Church Slavonic discontinuity and related questions of local dynasties’ legitimacy.
