The present essay addresses the analysis of three fragments from the Tango no kuni fudoki (Record of the Tango province and its customs), which have reached us indirectly through various mediaeval sources. The Tango no kuni fudoki is one of the provincial chronicles compiled in response to Queen Genmei’s edict in 713. Although these three fragments do not provide a complete understanding of the original text, they offer insights into certain anecdotes closely tied to the narrative of the ancient province. This paper will begin by introducing the characteristics of the text, including its dating, authorship, and style. Following this introduction, the essay will delve into the themes present within the fragments, considering their connection to subsequent historical and cultural developments. Ultimately, the paper will provide an annotated translation of the three fragments, aiming to shed light on their content and significance.
