On 25 October 1967, Luigi Meneghello delivers a lecture at the Italian Cultural Institute in London, an occasion he later refers to as A Matter of Little Importance. At the centre of his reflection are Fascism and its complicity with the Italian educational and cultural system: “an education one could die from”, whose effects are radically overturned by his encounter with his mentor, Antonio Giuriolo. During the lecture, Meneghello reads several pages and discusses figures, themes and motifs that find their way into the books of the following decade, Pomo pero (1974) and, above all, Fiori italiani (1976), for which these materials constitute a significant avant-text. Presented here is the complete text of the lecture, transcribed from the author’s papers preserved by the Fondazione Corti, University of Pavia.
