This book proposes a re-reading of Stanley Cavell in a pedagogical key, through a critical analysis of the complex and variegated work of this American philosopher of the analytic tradition. The work is structured around a number of crucial interpretative foci: the sceptical cipher of pedagogy, twixt loss and conquest of the self, solitude and socialisation; the attention paid to the interpretative dimension of textuality and to a model of human Bildung distinctly subject to an aesthetic paradigm of formation; an autobiographical inclination declined on the ethical-political front through the revitalisation of his own voice within a model of democratic individualism of Emersonian matrix. What emerges is a vision of philosophy as adult education, in the light of a critical Socratic interrogation of the sphere of the ordinary, understood as the site of intersubjective formation.
