Retracing Dessí’s collaboration in the magazines “L’Orto”, “Primato” and “Cronache” directed by Giorgio Vecchietti, among stories, essays and reviews that have remained largely unpublished, means deepening the writer’s artistic development by exploring into the creative laboratory of his debut. The 36 texts collected and commented by Francesca Bartolini allow us to analyse the thematic and stylistic approaches that were further developed and deepened in the subsequent production. At the same time they take into account the years of the fascist dictatorship, allowing us to investigate the development of an intellectual conscience engaged in an anti-fascist, rebel movement typical of many writers of that generation. Weaving the critical discourse with the reading of the correspondence, the complex relationship that linked Dessí to the three editorial offices is noted, testifying to the passion of a young artist eager to follow his inclination, but also aware of the difficulty of preserving his freedom and identity in the limitations of the regime.

Giuseppe Dessí

Giuseppe Dessí is among the most significant and discreet Italian writers of the twentieth century. Born in Sardinia, he was able to conciliate a refined European culture and a deep bond with his homeland. This bond is a constant refrain of his narrative, from the novel San Silvano, inspired to the places of his childhood, to Paese d’ombre and La scelta, and is conveyed through the suggestion of mountain landscapes, myths and legends. Francesca Bartolini obtained her PhD in Italian Studies at the University of Florence. She has dealt with twentieth century authors (Bodini, Caproni, Dessí, Bassani, Pontiggia...), publishing unreleased works and focusing a part of her research on Jacobbi and Rinaldi. After an in-depth study on the culture in the Emilia Region (Firenze Univeristy Press, 2014), in 2015 she published a book on Florence’s cultural life in the 1970s: Fra teatro e politica la storia di un’amicizia. I Mannini-Dall’Orto e la famiglia Pertini (The story of a friendship between theatre and politics. The Mannini-Dall'Orto and the Pertini family).
