Professor Giuliano Amato is an outstanding constitutionalist with a very prestigious academic career. He was Professor of Italian and comparative constitutional law at the Faculty of Political Sciences of the "Sapienza" University of Rome for a long time, and after that taught at the European University Institute of Fiesole for many years, where he is now a Professor Emeritus. He is the author of a series of monographs and several essays on the rights to freedom, forms of state and government, economic and competition laws, European integration and political culture. In the academic field, he held a great number of posts, including President of the Institute of the Italian Encyclopaedia, President of the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies of Pisa, President of the Committee of Guarantors for the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the Italian Unification, President of the Centro Studi Americani in Rome and President of the International Advisory Board of the ItalianiEuropei Foundation. Between the end of the 1980s and the end of the 2010s, he held the posts of Head of the Italian Government (twice), deputy head of the Italian Government, Italian Minister of the Treasury (twice), Italian Minister of Internal Affairs (twice) and President of the Italian Competition and Market Authority. Furthermore, between 2002 and 2003, he was Vice President of the Convention for the future for Europe, whose task was to write the "Draft of the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe". And finally, since 2013, he has held the post of judge of the Italian Constitutional Court.
