The doctoral thesis presented here investigates the historical landscape of the Cinque Terre through the analysis of the multiform territorial iconography, historical texts and ancient land registers. The aim is to develop a methodology (possibly extensible to other contexts) for the qualitative assessment of the landscape, where the benchmark is defined by abstract state conditions emerging by the application of parameters called "historical indicators". The time thresholds analysed (1612, 1643, 1799, 1918-32, 1982, 1990) lead to interpretative syntheses (e.g. those on Riomaggiore) aimed at identifying rules for project actions shared by local communities.
