In the last decades tourism has become one of the main industries in the world economy. In this context, the study of tourist destinations is increasingly becoming a critical element for the competitiveness of tourism-oriented countries. The main purpose of this research was to identify the local tourism systems in Italy and how they compete with each other. Through the application of the Istat-Sforzi methodology and the techniques of Spatial Econometrics, the volume offers a broad overview of cartographic representations of Italian destinations and elaborates analysis proxies to empirically measure the sources of competitiveness of these business systems, focusing in particular on the extended tourism business and on destination networks.
