On 10 and 11 May 2006, the International Conference on the theme “Fiume, paesaggio, difesa del suolo. Superare le emergenze, cogliere le opportunità” (River, landscape, defence of the soil. Overcoming emergencies, seizing opportunities) was held in the Rectorate's Aula Magna in Florence. The cultural and scientific input of this initiative (promoted and organised by Prof. Giulio G. Rizzo - PhD in Landscape Design, Dr. Michele Ercolini and by Prof. Guido Ferrara - Master in Landscape of the University of Florence), that is to say the attempt to transform a "system of needs" (ascribable to the necessity of defending the soil) into a "system of opportunities" for the design of "new landscapes", has characterised most of the reports presented in the two days of work that are included in this volume.
