In this work, the essential concepts of Naturalistic Museology are presented as they are treated in the course of lectures held at the Faculty of Letters. The first part has a general character and takes into consideration, after providing a picture of the historical evolution of naturalistic museums, their three fundamental tasks, namely conservation, teaching and scientific research, and ends with hints of museography, in particular on the problems of environmental parameters and safety. The second part refers, with specific contributions from museum operators, to the problems and characteristics of the various sections of the Museum of Natural History of the University of Florence. An appendix, reserved for students of History and Protection of Archaeological Heritage, deals schematically with rocks and, in a more analytical way, with palaeontological techniques.
