The Special School for Librarians and Paleographic Archivists (Scuola speciale per bibliotecari e archivisti paleografi) was founded in 1926 at the newly established University of Florence and remained active until 1956. During this period, it had a significant impact on the education and professional development of librarians and archivists, and its influence extended well beyond its years of operation. Notable faculty members included esteemed scholars such as Luigi Schiaparelli, Carlo Battisti, Antonio Panella, Medea Norsa, and Roberto Ridolfi, while distinguished students included Leopoldo Cassese, Rudolf Blum, and Anna Maria Enriques.
This work first reconstructs the origins of the School and the debates surrounding its establishment, with particular attention to the legislative context. It then traces its history through an examination of its course offerings and curricula, the faculty’s research directions, and the theses completed during its years of operation.
