This essay analyzes the destiny of the Italian cities from the 10th to the 12th century. More specifi-cally, it focusses on many aspects, including: the evolution of the urban network; the topography and the structure of the seats of power, the revival of inscriptions as means to convey different kinds of messages, including propaganda, and the impressive growth of the stratification inside the cities, due to many different factors. Many archaeological examples are considered and de-scribed, in order to give the reader a vivid picture of a urban society in constant growth.
