Reimagining Digital Gazetteers: A Wikidata-Powered Approach

  • Maxime Guénette

This article explores the potential of Wikidata as a multilingual, collaborative knowledge base to simplify the production and dissemination of digital gazetteers within a Linked Open Data framework. Through two case studies—Temples in Roman Britain and the International (Digital) Dura-Europos Archive (IDEA)—we examine how Wikidata can support both large-scale and small-scale gazetteer initiatives by enhancing their interoperability, analytical depth, and inclusiveness. By engaging with challenges such as data quality, technical accessibility, and postcolonial critique, we argue that Wikidata is a viable and dynamic infrastructure for advancing digital scholarship and more democratic frameworks of engagement with cultural heritage.
