A theoretical and practical reappraisal of the limitations that the textual tradition of Quevedo's Memorandum "Católica, sacra, real Majestad" (ca 1638-1639) imposes on the genealogical method. Forty-six manuscripts and one early printed edition survive of a text that circulated initially in a clandestine, anonymous fashion. There appears to be at least three early versions of the text circulating during Quevedo's life (prior to 1645). The extant witnesses exhibit traces of contamination to a degree that makes filiation nearly impossible.
