The chapter surveys 18th-century utopian thought against the backdrop of Enlightenment reason, revolution and industrialisation. From Diderot's philosophical voyages to Cabet's communist Icaria, utopias multiply and diversify, embracing equality, science and collective happiness. The American and French Revolutions transform utopian ideals into political programmes, making the dream of a just, rational society appear historically attainable.
