While the presence of splendid ancient and modern villas in the hills of Posillipo and Vomero is widely documented, the history of the villas of Capodimonte seems to have been overshadowed by the subsequent foundation of the royal site of Capodimonte. This article attempts to reconstruct the topography of the area chosen by King Charles prior to the construction of the palace. The genealogy of the Rossi del Barbazzale family and the reconstruction, based on documentary evidence, of its extensive properties in the area where the royal palace was built, reveal a widespread settlement of villas between the 16th and 18th centuries. In the case of the Rossi del Barbazzale building complex, the existing architecture was completely demolished to make way for the large construction site of the Bourbon palace.
