This chapter is divided into two distinct parts, both sharing the common thread of the need to limit political power. British constitutionalism, marked in particular by the consequences of the Glorious Revolution, and French constitutionalism, whose indelible legacy of the 1789 Revolution persists to this day, are perhaps the two political phenomena that best represent the Western notion of limiting political power through the constitution. Thus, the analysis of these two movements will be limited to discussing the function of the constitution in each of the historical contexts under consideration.
