The chapter analyses Lorenzetti's 14th-century frescoes in Siena as an early vision of the ideal city defined by quality of life rather than geometric form. The prosperous, joyful city of Good Government embodies the urban ideal of its merchant rulers. The chapter then traces how, from the late 16th century, military concerns displaced utopian ambitions, shifting urban design toward fortification.
