The essay begins by outlining two radically new female experiences in the post-war Italy: those of Alba de Céspedes, editor of the political-literary magazine Mercurio, and of Anna Garofalo with her radio programme Words of a Woman. In the final pages it highlights the gap between those experiences and a women's setting marked by the contrast between the enduring power of tradition and the stimuli provided by recent wartime and political experiences.
