Drawing on the correspondence between Baran and Sweezy, the chapter reconstructs their unresolved debate regarding imperialism, the question of whether the "economic surplus" of monopoly capitalism structurally exceeds Marxian surplus value, and issues such as profit by deduction, movement of wages, and interpenetration—matters left unsettled at Baran’s sudden death.
