The chapter examines how Jules Verne and Emilio Salgari brought utopian and dystopian futures to a mass readership. Verne's contrasting cities of Franceville and Stahlstadt dramatise the clash between humanist and militarist visions of progress, while his Paris of 1960 anticipates modern technology with striking accuracy. Salgari's Wonders of the Year 2000 offers a more adventurous, ambivalent take on a science-dominated future.
